Acquisition of Danish Citizenship
Acquisition of Danish Citizenship
Do you reside abroad and have you lost your Danish citizenship by acquiring another citizenship prior to 1 September 2015?
If you did not apply within the first 5-year transitional scheme, then there is good news for you.
In June of 2021, the Folketing adopted a new 5-year transitional scheme which allows you to regain your Danish citizenship by submitting a declaration. The transitional scheme will enter into force on 1 July 2021 and will be running until 1 July 2026.
You can find the rules on the website of the Ministry of Immigration and Integration, and the Declaration on the Acquisition of Danish Citizenship for former Danish citizens here https://uim.dk/arbejdsomraader/statsborgerskab/tidligere-danske-statsborgere/hvis-man-ikke-opfylder-bopaelsbetingelserne-overgangsordning/.
How can I have lost my Danish citizenship?
If you applied for a foreign citizenship prior to 1 September 2015, you may have lost your Danish citizenship pursuant to the previously applicable Section 7 of the Danish Citizenship Act.
With effect from 1 September 2015 this provision has been repealed which means that after this date you do no longer lose your Danish citizenship when applying for foreign citizenship.
How can you apply to regain your Danish citizenship?
You can apply by submitting a declaration directly to the Ministry of Immigration and Integration - also from abroad. The website of the Ministry of Immigration and Integration gives information and guidance on the detailed rules.
For a fee you can also submit the declaration at a Danish Embassy or one of the many Danish Consulates abroad. You can find the nearest Danish representations to you here Find Danish embassies and consulates abroad (um.dk) .
How do I get a Danish passport?
You can apply for a Danish passport once the Ministry of Immigration and Integration has processed and made a decision in your case.
Here Find Danish embassies and consulates abroad (um.dk) is the list where you can apply for a Danish passport and do the biometrics.
As a general rule you need to make an appointment for submission of your passport application, so please check the website of your preferred Embassy or Consulate.
